The BugHammer Bug

Please Note: if you have not read our “About” page yet, we strongly encourage you to do so now – both because we want you to benefit from our wealth of information about bedbugs, and also because the following describes our process of treatment. And knowing more about bedbugs beforehand will help the following make more sense.

Our Process

The first thing we will do is ask you to perform a short series of tasks to prepare the room to be treated. While our method is objectively more effective than trying to treat your bedbugs with poisons, this maximizes the chance of us not having to make a return trip. Don’t worry, it’s painless. Here’s a PDF copy, so you can see for yourself:

Then, we schedule an appointment to go out to you, to visually inspect. If conditions in your home allow us to start treatment right away – which is likely – then we will. If not, and some preparation is still needed, then we will reschedule to come back out within a few days.

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

Bringing the Heat

Heat treatment to fully eliminate bedbugs consists of completely sealing off the infected room (or rooms), with tape along the seams of all the doors, and insulation panels covering the windows, then using a specially-designed Heating Element that raises the ambient temperature inside that room to an exact and sustained 128*F, while also circulating that hot air entirely around the room. We then let the machine run for a minimum of 8 hours. Under any circumstances, it should not be longer than 16 hours.

Note 1

Please don’t be alarmed by the temperature – we looked into this! – 128*F is not hot enough to risk affecting any electronics (as long as they are not running), nor have any risk of heat-damage to most common materials found in the home.

Our Operators will inspect for anything potentially dangerous or damageable in the area beforehand – though, obviously, move your wax candles and your pet goldfish “Huckleberry” elsewhere, beforehand.

Note 2

The Heating Element that we use runs on electricity, powered through eight extension cables, that we will provide in safe working order. We will need to use at least three different circuits, to avoid tripping any breakers. Unfortunately, that means that for most houses and apartments, we will need to run these cables from the sealed-off room into a couple of adjacent rooms, to reach outlets. You will still be free to use the adjacent rooms with the cables running through them, during treatment.

This 8 hour period of treatment is to ensure that all areas of the room are able to reach the desired temperature, which is hot enough to kill bedbugs, their nymphs, and their eggs, within an hour (along with pretty much any other insects that aren’t buried deep within the walls). This will not damage anything you own that is not listed on our pre-treatment checklist.

The reason for the length of this treatment time is to allow the heat to fully penetrate into areas bedbugs like to hide, such as in the cracks of your bedframe, in the outer lining of the mattress and box-spring, and under the toe-molding of your walls.

Sorry for the inconvenience of the cables. We thought about using generators instead, but then realized the constant noise from that would probably be far more annoying than a handful of cables taped to your floor.

Again. We aim to kill ALL of your bedbugs. The first time.
